NYT: Trying Again to Make Books Obsolete
David Pogue on Sony’s latest e-book gadget:
“The market for downloadable books will grow by 400 percent in each of the next two years, to over $25 billion by 2008,” predicted the keynote speaker at the 2001 Women’s National Book Association meeting. “Within a few years after the end of this decade, e-books will be the preponderant delivery format for book content.”
Whoops.
The opening paragraphs. Should say something — which I’d summarize as a big meh. Read why.
As if we expected differently!

Comments:
I know too many people now who have downloaded books-on-tape format on their iPods now. That seems like the natural progression, if anything.
And really, this gadget is expensive and makes the book into this ephemeral information. I like the heft, the feel of a book. I like looking around my place and seeing shelves filled with books. It appeals to the collector in me.
Meh, indeed.
From what I’ve heard many regular e-book readers say, the best for the money and most popular gadget is still the ebookwise.
