Surprise: 24-inch Apple iMac
Back in September, 2004, I looked on the new iMacs with pleasure. Had only one request, really:
The only thing better would be a bigger iMac G5. Slashdot to the rescue, though, quoting an Apple engineer (if you believe it) saying that they chose the arm they did specifically because the articulating ones couldn’t support LCD panels larger than 20 inches.
Well, fast forward two years. While rumors of a 23-inch iMac have been around (and around, and around), Apple’s announcement this morning took many by surprise — not only for being a week sooner than the latest rumors expected, but an inch larger, too:

Better still, they dropped the prices — $999 for the entry-level 17” and $1499 for the 20”, with the new 24 coming in at $1999. Sweet.
Now, if Adobe could just get moving on Universal Creative Suite applications.…
Note: Yeah, I’ve had some troubles with my existing iMac. But not so many that I wouldn’t consider another — and a 24” iMac is more than $1000 cheaper than a tower and 23-inch monitor combo. Another nice one, Apple.

Comments:
Once again, every time I buy an Apple product, they come out with an even more awesome version of it 3 months later. :(
The specs are so good on the iMacs, that it makes me wonder, why buy a Tower and monitor? Unless you are into serious amounts of video editing, the iMac can do it all.
Great blog - my favourite! My blog was just to learn the software. But I have created a better one for: http://www.britishshakespearecompany.com/diary
They don’t use it quite like I intended and only post every now and again.
Same here, Jon, though I bought my 20” in March; the pasrt that really kills me is that the 2 higher ones now ship with 1g of RAM.

I’m looking at both, and here’s why I’d consider a tower:
- The monitor is separate. Most of the problems I’ve had with my existing iMac are monitor-related — and, as you know, it’s not just a matter of replacing the monitor!
- Memory. Lots more available in a tower. IMacs are limited to 3GB.
- Most importantly, storage. Shooting photos in RAW has created a storage crisis of the first magnitude around here, and I think that 250GB — or even 500GB, available as an option — isn’t going to be enough.
The latter is addressable through external storage (yuk — desk space and another fan) or upgrading the server here (and relying on the gigabit Ethernet). Both options are made more realistic by the ~$1500 savings over a tower/23” combo, however.…
Do you work off a flatscreen or CRT? I have been thinking about letting the moths out of my wallet and buying a 23” screen for a while. Mostly to free up lots of deskspace.
I had a CTX 19” monitor for 5 years and one sunday morning it died on me. I emailed CTX asking how much to fix it. 3 days later, a knock on my door and a brand new 19” replacement monitor delivered free (which I have had for 4 years now).
Do you think its worth paying for Apple monitor or another brand?
