MSC Arts Festival Poster, Final

They went with this version, with one major change: maintain the margins!

MSC Arts Festival Poster, v2c (Final)

Also, Dystopos’s suggestion to justify the “Lectures…” and “Macon State…” lines has been rattling around my head, and works well with the type off the bottom — reinforcing the margin box. Thanks.

So, now that it’s off to press, let’s bleed on it. What should I do better next time? (The previous versions of this poster are linked through Flickr if you’d like to refer back.)

Comments:

God help me if anyone ever offers criticism to me as I’m about to give, but:

1) Don’t be afraid of line/lines as an organizational tool. In this case, one line would add quite a bite to the design.
2) Actually, solid blocks would work just as well. Anything to promote the schedule over the biographies.
3) A hierarchy of type isn’t entirely established. In working with just one font, you’ve made it a little difficult to understand what the most and least important items are.

Really, I love the space, love the photo, love the type. Just wanted to add something to consider.

that is lovely.

only thing i would perhaps take a second look at is the last paragraph on the left-hand side, watch out for RIVERS.

In the “What should I do better next time” department… You have a few rivers in the bio type, and it looks like a widow (or orphan—can never keep those straight) too. If this poster isn’t FINAL FINAL and that stuff can/has been corrected, then I think it’s looking quite good.

oh, looks like khy beat me to the point. sorry for the repeat.

my .02 worth

don’t like the text wrap. either wrap it better to the photo or don’t

and another .02ยข

the headline should be on the left side and the bios which are secondary info should have been on the right. Id have flopped the whole thing

Doug, there are actually two flavors of the same face, serif and semi-sans, plus the script. Not obvious enough, you’re saying…?

I’m curious about the lines. Where? I did have lines on the first edition (check back through Flickr) so not afraid, just didn’t think they were needed.…

Thanks for the rivers call-out everyone; I did tweak Bharati’s bio before sending out the final-final. Been staring at too long to notice but couldn’t do too much because of the contraints imposed by the shape words used.

I updated the photo to reflect the changes. Thank you!

Jeff, I talked a little about why the text doesn’t wrap in the previous entries and comments. Look back through to see if you agree with the compromise.

Jeff, apologies, I wrote the above before seeing your later comment.

It started the other way — see the “based on…” link on Flickr — but after flopping both the background and the text back and forth several times, this felt strongest.

I’ve been abe to ask several people (in person) what they see first when they look at the poster. It’s pretty evenly split between the headline and the arts logo (followed by the other). None have said the bios.
