If your Mac is anything G3 (Blue & White) or later, put a gig of RAM in it and install OS X. You won’t regret it. (Especially if the idea of only having to restart once or twice a month appeals.…)
J., I‘m in the middle of making the leap to InDesign CS. Join me, won’t you? Imagine — native PS and Illustrator files, right in the layout. Superior — and speedy — PDF production. I’m on 10.3, and like I feel about my iPod, I don’t know how I ever got along without it. Font Agent Pro is pretty good for managing fonts, by the way.

I’d love to, but all of my clients (Penguin, HarperCollins, Random House, Norton, etc.) still use Quark. So until they change, it wouldn’t behoove me to make the jump!
I’ve been working in InDesign CS for about 7 months. I cringe anytime I have to go back to Quark. InDesign is far superior and easier to use. J you should start playing around with it before long you will want to make the jump. Most of the publishers we work with are planning on making the switch over to InDesign. Quark should just die. It’s crazy expensive. 6 isn’t backwards compatable and you have to buy a $400 RIP to print from it. What are they thinking?
J: my clients are still using Quark 4.1 and are resistant to change so I will be working in both programs—probably indefinitly.
Just took a class in InDesign and am investing the big bucks for a G5, with OSX etc. I have one question: what font management program should I use with OSX? Are there more than one and if so are there pros and cons to them?
I use Suitcase, but it’s not 100%. They finally added a search feature recently, and the autoactivation is handy. (Something like iTunes’ Smart Folders would rock. Listening, Extensis?)
As I remember, Quark 4 and OS X played fairly well together, especially if the dock was hidden. And yes, it’s been that long since I’ve used it.
Comments:
Super cool Chris apologizes and uses Latin to boot! We love you Chris!
Is it just me, or is the type frickin’ insanely small?!
It’s small but it’s not that small. When was the last time you had your eyes checked out by a doctor?
J., what browser are you using?
Internet Explorer… I know, I know.…
I have 20/25 vision, in case you were wondering!
This is what I see.…
Oh dear! That is small! Any ideas from our Web design experts?
J., Internet Exploder and OS 9? Time to upgrade!

I have a G4 (1.5 gb of RAM), and I have OS X (Jaguar), but I do most everything in Quark and I don’t want to have to buy the new OS X version!
I know I’ll be forced to make the jump soon, but I’m slow to toss out what works well for now…

I’m in the process of switching as well.
